To put it simply, there are lots of different types of boilers, which can make choosing a replacement boiler extremely difficult. Hence, in this blog post we've outlined the pros and cons of different types of boiler that you can install, i.e. your home's most important appliance.
Conventional Boiler (A.K.A open vent boilers/regular boilers)
Conventional boilers have a cylinder and two tanks. One tank is used to feed the
cylinder, usually located in an upstairs cupboard and another is used to run/maintain the central heating system as a whole.
When replacing your old boiler, you should consider a
conventional boiler if you have more than one bathroom or just have a high
demand for hot water. Installing a conventional boiler is also a good option for homes
with low water pressure.
Pros of installing a conventional boiler:
- Running hot water from multiple taps at the same time
Cons of installing a conventional boiler:
- The cylinder and tanks require space
- The hot water can run out
- When the hot water runs out you have to wait for the tank to refill and reheat
System Boilers (A.K.A. Sealed System boilers)
Like a conventional boiler, system boilers have a cylinder
that is usually placed in an upstairs cupboard. However, they do not have water
tanks as all major components are built into the cylinder and the boiler itself.
When you need a replacement boiler but haven't got the space for a tank in the loft, installing a system boiler might be the best choice. System boilers are also useful for homes that have a couple of bathrooms, so need plenty of hot water.
Pros of installing a system boiler
- Do not require much room - no need for tanks in
the loft
- Hot water from multiple taps at the same time
Cons of installing a system boiler
- Hot water isn’t available instantly
- Need a storage location for the water cylinder
- The hot water can run out
- When the hot water runs out you have to wait for the tank to refill and reheat
Combination Boilers (A.K.A. combi boilers)
Combi boilers is the most common boiler in the UK and is extremely popular amongst homeowners upgrading/replacing their boiler. They heat water directly
from the mains and so require no external tanks or cylinders.
Combi boilers are a viable replacement option for smaller homes with no room for tanks and cylinders or for use
in homes that do not need a lot of hot water at the same time.
Pros of installing a combi boiler
- Deliver water at mains pressure so there is no
need for a separate pump
- No risk of pipe work freezing in the loft
- Do not require much space- no need for a tank in
the loft
- Unlimited heat and hot water
Cons of installing a combi boiler
- Water pressure is reduced if using hot water
from more than one tap at the same time
- In some instances they're less economical to run, although this is dependent on the manufacturer and the chosen boiler.
